Denver as a Sanctuary City? TONIGHT, April 27, 2017

Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition and other groups are hosting a forum in Denver tonight about how to make Denver a true sanctuary for persecuted immigrants. Here’s the press release:

Organizations to Unveil Community-Crafted Denver Sanctuary Policy

Immigrants call on City of Denver to do more to protect all residents

DENVER — On Thursday, April 27, Denver immigrant rights and legal organizations will unveil a community-crafted sanctuary policy to the Office of the Mayor and Denver City Council. Advocates urge the City to adopt policies to proactively protect immigrants living in Denver from the increasingly aggressive ICE enforcement tactics under the Trump administration.

Serious community concerns have been raised in light of video footage of undercover Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in a Denver courtroom. The community also has confirmed enforcement activity at Denver Public Schools over the past several weeks. Advocates are urging the city to immediately adopt a six-point proposal to protect all Denverites. Also, “Orange is the New Black” actress and author Diane Guerrero, whose parents were deported when she was a child, will introduce the initiative at the forum, following a a meet-and-greet at 5:45 PM at the same venue.

The organizations include the American Friends Service Committee, Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition, Colorado People’s Alliance, Meyer Law Office, Mi Familia Vota, Padres y Jóvenes Unidos, Together Colorado, and others who have come together under the banner of the Immigration Resistance table.
