Last Wednesday, we presented a discussion about the history of Charles and David Koch, using their vast wealth from Koch Industries and Georgia Pacific to impose a stranglehold on Democracy. This Wednesday, May 16, we present “Koch Brothers Exposed”, the latest documentary from Robert Greenwald (Wal-Mart: the High Cost of Low Price, Outfoxed, Rethink Afghanistan). Watch the trailer here. The film will cover information not covered in last week’s presentation, including attempts at voter suppression as well as influencing the curriculum of our major universities.

Join us as we examine the issue of Money in Politics through the eyes of Jeff Thormodsgaard, Senior Associate with Mendez Consulting, Inc. For the last seven years, Jeff has been a legislative and campaign specialist and previously served as the legislative aide to the Chair of the Colorado House Education Committee and aided the liaison to City Council for Denver Mayor Wellington Webb. Mr. Thormodsgaard will share his unique perspective on the role of money in politics and he will likely challenge many of our preconceived notions.

Marisa Dirks, LAD Secretary, will lead a short discussion regarding the Koch brothers and the influence they have on the political landscape in America. This will serve as an introduction to the next LAD film series event on Wednesday, May 16, which will feature the documentary film, “Koch Brothers: Exposed”

RTD Q&A Forum

On March 27th, the RTD Board voted unanimously to approve a plan to construct a “hybrid” transportation system – part commuter rail and part bus system – from Denver to Longmont. As you are aware, this has been a highly contentious issue since 2004, when voters approved funding for what was to be a full commuter rail solution.

LAD welcomes RTD Directors Lee Kemp and Tom Tobiassen to elaborate on the recent vote, discuss what this will mean for Longmont citizens, and entertain questions from the audience.

(Melissa Glickman, from the county’s EnergySmart program, will be giving a 15 minute presentation on the service beginning at 6:45pm and the RTD forum will begin immediately following.)

Historically there were benchmarks such as Women’s Suffrage leading to their right to vote, the rejection of Social Darwinism, the emergence of muckrakers such as Upton Sinclair, professional social workers, the passage of the Interstate Commerce Act and the Sherman Antitrust Act. But how does the Progressive Movement manifest itself today? Where do we go from here? And what are specific things an individual can do to honor the values of progressive change?
