If you received an Official Call in the mail, your participation is vital! Proxy votes are not allowed. The Vacancy Committee process has been set up according to Colorado State Law, to elect someone to fill a vacancy when a representative resigns. (In this case, to fill Boulder County Commissioner Ben Pearlman’s seat until the general election in November) IMPORTANT TO KNOW: If a quorum is not met (50% + 1 of the Vacancy Committee), Governor Hickenlooper will select our next Boulder County Commissioner. Your attendance is imperative so that this election can be completed.
THE VACANCY COMMITTEE MEETS THIS SUNDAY, January 8, 2012, at 1:00pm at the Boulder County Dems Headquarters, 1725-B Walnut St., Boulder, CO. (There will be a carpool from Longmont. Meet behind Chili’s at 12:15 pm. Please be prompt)

A crowd of around 60 people enjoyed Strider Benston’s rousing presentation about Neo-Liberal Economics on Wednesday night. Strider laid the groundwork as to why we are in the financial mess we are in, with story and history, poetry, and some singing too!
We’d also like to thank Joel Davidow, former Chair of the Boulder County Dems, who came to explain the upcoming Vacancy Committee Process.
Thanks to all that attended our first LAD meeting of 2012!: members of LAD and some new faces too — friends in our progressive community who came to show support — candidates, local elected officials, making for a most enjoyable evening.
We look forward to presenting upcoming programs during this most exciting election year, and welcome you to future events.
And as always — bring a friend!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Strider Benston, civil rights activist
Strider Benston’s long and passionate dedication to political activism — dating back to his days of knowing and working with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — as well as his deep and contextual appreciation for American history, will inform his upcoming presentation on Neo-Liberal Economics. You will come away knowing more about how deregulation, privatization and the so-called “rule of the market” has destroyed what was once great about America’s economy and morphed it into our present day gap between the very wealthy and everyone else, thus eliminating the concept of the “public good” and “community”.
Please join LAD as we are proud to host this event.

“A must-see film for the future of the planet.”
— Zac Goldsmith, Member of UK Parliament
Maybe amidst the holiday rush is exactly the right time to see this film. The Economics of Happiness explores the present day economic, environmental and social crisis of “More is More”, and offers a hopeful, possible solution with localization at its core. Instead of capitalism, could localism be the new economic model to save our future? With commentary by Vandana Shiva, Bill McKibben, David Korten, Keibo Oiwa and more.

As many of you know, major oil interests have descended upon Longmont to take advantage of the hydrolic fracturing (fracking) “opportunities” available thanks to mineral rights below and adjacent to Union Reservoir. On Tuesday, November 15, a large group of concerned, passionate citizens presented their concerns to Longmont’s City Council. As large as this group of citizens is, it is not nearly large enough to fight the moneyed, big oil interests.
We need YOUR help!
Get educated, get involved and get going, Longmont!
- Get educated!
Learn the facts surrounding the many dangers inherent in the practice of hydrolic fracturing:

President, Longmont Area Democrats
In the aftermath of another city election cycle, it is critical that we, as Longmont citizens, unite in support of our newly elected and existing city council members. Whether we like it or not, we aren’t going to agree on everything. In fact, many of us will find more disagreement than agreement with one another, but it’s this ideological diversity which allows a community to better serve the whole of its populace rather than catering only to any one faction. As Longmont continues to grow and become increasingly diversified, it will transform itself and provide an even greater variety of opportunities for citizens and business interests. Attempting to squelch diversity will only serve to further divide our community while contributing to the deterioration of Longmont’s ability to effectively serve the needs of its citizens.
Regardless of political persuasion or ideology, it is incumbent upon each of us to work together in the years ahead in order that we may better serve the whole of Longmont and to maximize its potential as a truly a great city!
To that end, we would like to extend our congratulations to the following candidates who earned election night victories on November 1:
- Dennis Coombs, Mayor
- Sarah Levison, At-Large
- Brian Bagley, Ward 1
- Bonnie Finley, Ward 3
Please join us in supporting these newly elected/re-elected public officials as well as current city council members Katie Witt, Alex Sammoury and Gabe Santos.
