Take Action NOW! Deadline EXTENDED!

REMEMBER SB181, the set of landmark Oil & Gas regulations that were passed during Colorado’s legislative session last year? More local control (that means YOU) was built into that law, including a new set of board members selected for the COGCC (Colorado Oil & Gas Conservation Commission) to reflect more oversight over industry.

Another important addition: Longmont City Council was able to direct staff to contract with Dr. DetLev Helmig for air monitoring at our Union Reservoir and Vance Brand Airport. Council had directed oil wells from city property to be moved to Weld County, east of Union Reservoir. Even though removing the wells and flow line was an important first step in local control, it did not remove fracking under our reservoir — water that has been slated and engineered to be domestic household water. Air quality monitoring stations have been up and running since December, 2019.

EASY GUESS as to what was found: readings for voc’s (volatile organic compounds), methane and ozone have been far above EPA standards.

ALSO TROUBLING: Spikes in the readings happening at 12am — this can only mean that well operators are flaring* methane in the early morning hours.

QUESTION: Since the flow line under Longmont has been plugged and abandoned, therefore no way to deliver the fracked oil, is this the behavior of a now desperate industry to burn off excess gas — under the cover of night — at a time when our health, specifically respiratory health, is being compromised by a pandemic?

This cannot stand. Here’s your chance to speak out NOW.
This is your opportunity to influence the COGCC’s first public draft of rules before the actual rulemaking hearing and with a personal urgency. Now they’ve hit us at home.

DEADLINE for COMMENT EXTENDED TO Wednesday, May 20. Speak your mind: COGCC Public Comment, here.

LAD Meeting Wednesday, May 6, 6:30pm!

THANKS TO ALL who attended our meeting! All meeting materials and links are in the “resources” widget to the left.

Why should Colorado’s middle class pay a larger tax than the top 5%? Fair Tax Colorado aims to fix that by asking Colorado’s wealthiest to pay slightly more, and giving a tax break to 95% of Colorado taxpayers. As a result, $1billion will go toward increasing pay for Colorado teachers & student support staff!

Caitlin Schneider and Abby Vining, from Colorado Fiscal Institute will be on hand to present Fair Tax Colorado (Initiative 271), which will be on your 2020 ballot. For more info go to fairtaxcolorado.org

Email us for the login link, here…thanks!

LAD’s first VIRTUAL Meeting was April 1…

…and it went very smoothly! THANKS to everyone who logged on and could comfortably watch from home (no need to show your face on screen if you chose not to), unmute your mike if you had a comment, or write questions in the chatbox. WE APPRECIATE YOUR PARTICIPATION and we hope you had fun! We look forward to our next virtual meeting on May 6! (Watch your email for a link the day of the meeting) If you missed our April 1 meeting, please check out the “resources” widget to the left for all presentation materials…

Due to Coronavirus protocol, our next LAD Meeting for April 1 will not be a public meeting. What hasn’t changed, is that we will be utilizing and preparing all of our available resources to give you a valuable presentation on the 2020 CENSUS. Email us for the link if you’d like to join in at 6:30pm tonight!

We’ll have an update on what you can do locally to keep democracy alive during a global pandemic. Though we are physically isolated from each other, we need to do all we can to remain engaged in the political process. As we’ve seen in the performance of our present administration during this crisis, it becomes all the more necessary to ensure the health and safety of our democracy moving forward. We believe Governor Polis is showing true leadership and Colorado is fortunate to have a mail in ballot system. That’s why you’ll need to know what candidates will be on your ballot, and we’ll talk about what bills were in process at the time our state legislators were understandably adjourned and rightfully went home to shelter in place.

Our state legislators have also been extremely helpful and active in providing valuable coronavirus resources to help us through this crisis as it unfolds, highlighting the network of county and state agencies on the frontlines of this fight. We’ll have a list at the ready to share with all of you.

Stay tuned to this website. And as always, all materials will be posted on this site after the event, under the resources widget.

You can also sign up for our email blasts — a great source of info about this upcoming meeting and action items — by sending us an email at longmontareadems@gmail.com with “Sign Me Up!” in the subject line.

BE SAFE! Take all necessary precautions to ensure containment and prevent the spread of the coronavirus. We will get through this — albeit at a safe social distance, but — TOGETHER.

THANK YOU!

2020 Colorado Caucus Results by County!

THANKS for attending the 2020 Caucus! Considering that our Caucus structure changed this year because we had the Presidential Primary last Tuesday, with our Caucus basing its delegate allocation on the US Senate candidate preference poll, caucuses in Boulder County ran quite smoothly! Several trainings prior to caucus were offered by the Boulder County Democratic Party — and if you noticed, Boulder County Dems and their rockstar volunteers provided some of the earliest result figures to the state. Longmont Area Democrats were happy to provide as much caucus and candidate info as we could leading up to this important opportunity for democracy. As long as we have it, we should use it — and many of you did — THANK YOU to EVERYONE who stepped up to be or return as Precinct Leaders and those that stepped up to be Delegates to Boulder County Assembly on Saturday, March 28!
