History of the Longmont Area Democrats

During the 2002 campaign season it was obvious that there was no coordinated effort to organize the Democrats in Longmont. Eileen Penner remarked that we should have a Democratic group meeting in Longmont. The idea was mentioned to Britt Singer, who was the Boulder County Democrats County Chair. She thought it was a good idea and was willing to support the effort.

At a Boulder County Women’s luncheon, Ron Stewart mentioned he would like to see a group organize in Longmont. The idea was brought to the Boulder County Democratic Women’s president, Janet Reynolds. The group was very supportive and donated start-up money.

In January of 2003 the first organization meeting was held at Wanda Sterner’s home in Longmont. A small group of women met and formed an organization and named it The Longmont Area Democratic Women.

In February a second organizational meeting was held at the Sterner residence. Attending the Feb. 18, 2003 meeting were Eileen Penner, Lea Roberts, Bev Springer, Deb Gardner, Wanda Sterner, Sue Bridgeman, Mary Wickersham, Doerga Strohl, and Britta Singer.

At the March 5, 2003 meeting the first officers were selected. They were President Eileen Penner, Vice -President Caroline Gonzales, Treasurer Deb Gardner, Secretary Wanda Sterner, Chairperson for the Youth Outreach Committee Liesl Athen, Hispanic Outreach Committee Bev Springer, and Board Members at Large were Sue Bridgeman and Deb Gardner.

Originally the group was patterned after the Boulder County Democratic Women. We decided to meet in the evening and have snacks instead of an afternoon luncheon. The goal was to involve Longmont Democrats who did not attend either the luncheon group or the monthly Boulder County Democrat meeting.

The first meeting was held in a club house of an apartment complex. Representative Jack Pommer was the speaker. We had more than twenty people in attendance. Our second meeting was held in the Christ Congregational Church and Recorder Linda Salas was our speaker. By the third meeting we had obtained a room at the First United Methodist Church at 11th and Emery, where we continued to meet until January of 2005. It was during this period that we renamed our organization “The Longmont Area Democrats”.

In January, 2005 we moved to a room at the Longmont Co-op then in April, 2005 we moved to the Public Works Facility at 325 Airport Road.
