Strider Benston, civil rights activist
Strider Benston’s long and passionate dedication to political activism — dating back to his days of knowing and working with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. — as well as his deep and contextual appreciation for American history, will inform his upcoming presentation on Neo-Liberal Economics. You will come away knowing more about how deregulation, privatization and the so-called “rule of the market” has destroyed what was once great about America’s economy and morphed it into our present day gap between the very wealthy and everyone else, thus eliminating the concept of the “public good” and “community”.
Please join LAD as we are proud to host this event.

A crowd of around 60 people enjoyed Strider Benston’s rousing presentation about Neo-Liberal Economics on Wednesday night. Strider laid the groundwork as to why we are in the financial mess we are in, with story and history, poetry, and some singing too!
We’d also like to thank Joel Davidow, former Chair of the Boulder County Dems, who came to explain the upcoming Vacancy Committee Process.
Thanks to all that attended our first LAD meeting of 2012!: members of LAD and some new faces too — friends in our progressive community who came to show support — candidates, local elected officials, making for a most enjoyable evening.
We look forward to presenting upcoming programs during this most exciting election year, and welcome you to future events.
And as always — bring a friend!
HAPPY NEW YEAR!

If you received an Official Call in the mail, your participation is vital! Proxy votes are not allowed. The Vacancy Committee process has been set up according to Colorado State Law, to elect someone to fill a vacancy when a representative resigns. (In this case, to fill Boulder County Commissioner Ben Pearlman’s seat until the general election in November) IMPORTANT TO KNOW: If a quorum is not met (50% + 1 of the Vacancy Committee), Governor Hickenlooper will select our next Boulder County Commissioner. Your attendance is imperative so that this election can be completed.
THE VACANCY COMMITTEE MEETS THIS SUNDAY, January 8, 2012, at 1:00pm at the Boulder County Dems Headquarters, 1725-B Walnut St., Boulder, CO. (There will be a carpool from Longmont. Meet behind Chili’s at 12:15 pm. Please be prompt)

The Progressive Movement started as a response to industrialism during and after the Civil War, when our vast frontiers were being “tamed”, large cities were built, and business empires established. But with this also came corruption and the realization that not all Americans had an equal chance at the American Dream. Historically there were benchmarks such as Women’s Suffrage leading to their right to vote, the rejection of Social Darwinism, the emergence of muckrakers such as Upton Sinclair, professional social workers, the passage of the Interstate Commerce Act and the Sherman Antitrust Act. But how does the Progressive Movement manifest itself today? Where do we go from here? And what are specific things an individual can do to honor the values of progressive change?
Please join LAD as we are proud to present panel speakers Strider Benston, Ric Fitzgerald, Richard Juday, Bob Kinsey, Jonathan Singer, Padma Wick, as they discuss Progressivism today.
