In Remembrance of Doug Brown

Condolences

Former City Council Member Doug Brown passed away November 8th at the age of 68.  Doug is survived by his wife Mary Neal who frequently attends meetings here at LAD.   Doug served our community in numerous ways including on the Board of Environmental Affairs, the Mental Health Center Board.

Doug and his wife Mary could be seen helping with local Civic groups and at Democratic events.  If memory serves, Doug was a Delegate to the County Convention for Barack Obama in 2008.

For those of you who would like to say goodbye, services will be at 10 a.m. Nov. 19 at First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel.

Burial will be at Fort Logan Cemetery.

You can read his obitaury here:
http://longmontledger.com/longmont-milestones/longmont-obituaries/obituary-douglas-doyle-brown/

The Longmont Daily Times Call had a great profile several weeks ago which you can read here:

http://www.timescall.com/news_story.asp?ID=23314

Personal Note:

Doug Brown  interviewed me for a position on the Planning and Zoning Commission in 2007. I had lived in Longmont for several years, but had not really deeply engaged with the City community prior to this.  I appreciated his  thoughtful questions and eventual support of my appointment to P&Z.

I thoroughly enjoy the work I do on P&Z and just last year received a unanimous  reappointment to Planning and Zoning.

At the time of my first appointment, I was 27 years old and mostly surrounded by folks twice my age at these meetings. While some could have found this intimidating, I drew encouragement from the fact that I had people like Councilmember Brown supporting my Commission appointment.

Doug’s encouragement definitely  had an  impact on my life.
Through Doug’s  support, I have become a more engaged citizen of Longmont, and I am proud to call Longmont my home.  I will continue to sit in on Council meetings, and serve on Boards and Commissions for as long as the City will have me.   I was even inspired to run for City Council in 2009 (as short lived as that was).  There need to be more people with open minds to newcomers like he was.

I want to convey my profound thanks to Doug for making the City a better place for all, and to Mary for her continued work and sharing her husband with us.

Thanks Doug for helping open the door to Longmont policy and politics for me. Your efforts to get me involved in Longmont Civics have made my life fuller and more exciting. I will not forget your influence on the City or me.

In all Sincerity,
Jonathan Singer, MSW
President – Longmont Area Democrats
DNC National Delegate 2004, 2008

LAD Mid November Update

“If the World Series runs until election day, the networks will run the first one-half inning and project the winner.  ~Lindsey Nelson”

In case you didn’t know the Colorado State House is still up for grabs!!
So much for early returns…

Contents:
1) Thank You
2) Hickenlooper Needs Your Help 11/17/10
3) LAD Potluck 12/1/10
4) Remembering Doug Brown

1) Thank You
Thanks to all of you that voted, canvassed, called, sign-waved, blogged, brought volunteers food, cleaned up, etc.
The Democrats didn’t win big, but as Longmont Dem Ray Rodriguez summarized,  Red Hurricanes were replaced by Partly Cloudy Blue Skies. I want to offer my personal congratulations to all of those that threw their hat in the ring this year and all that volunteered.  It takes courage to speak your mind, and even more to talk politics to a total stranger, but hundreds of you did that in Longmont this year.  Democrats held onto the Governor’s seat, a US Senate seat, and the State Senate (the State House is still up for grabs).   Democrats won in every Boulder County Office they ran for.

  • Congratulations to HD 11 Candidate Deb Gardner, HD 12 Candidate Matt Jones, Commissioner Cindy Domenico, Treasurer Bob Hullinghorst, Assessor Jerry Roberts,  Surveyor Jason Emery.   Also, Congrats to State Reps. Dickey Lee Hullinghorst and Claire Levy, and Senator-Elect Jeanne Nicholson
  • My sincerest thanks to State Treasurer Carey Kennedy (possibly the best State Treasurer in Colorado’s history), SOS Bernie Buescher, Regent Candidates  Robert Bishop-Cotner and Melissa Hart, and solid Progressives like Rep. Diane Primavera, and Rep. Dennis Apuan.  They all fought great races but came up short this year.  In the words of  ”BC”,  Never Settle!
  • A Special Thanks to Rep. Betsy Markey.  She ran and won in a District  that went for John McCain in 2008.   2010 was not the same year and we wish her the best.  She took principled votes on tough issues and then came back to Colorado coffee shops and community centers to explain those votes. Let’s hope that her opponent takes this page out of her playbook and shows a commitment to outreach.
